Heartland Dental is looking to expand our team!  As a Corporate Counsel at Heartland Dental, you must be capable of handling a substantial amount of work in a fast-paced, dynamic in-house legal department.  We are looking for a flexible team player who is professional and service-oriented at all times.


This Corporate Counsel position will play a critical role supporting the Legal Department’s work-flows and pro-active projects.

Below is an overview of the duties and responsibilities you would take on in this role:

  • Manage multiple concurrent litigation matters across a broad range of subject matters and jurisdictions including but not limited to employment, medical malpractice, and general litigation;
  • Manage outside counsel, including providing strategic and tactical direction, while adhering to case budgets;
  • Conduct pre-litigation assessment of potential claims for and against the Company and evaluate/inform of any potential risk mitigation strategies;
  • Assist the Legal Department efforts in the creation, implementation and refinement of forms, processes, policies and procedures as needed;
  • Respond to day-to-day inquiries from internal stake-holders on a wide-range of legal subjects and consult with other in-house attorneys as needed;
  • Perform basic legal research as needed to address internal inquiries and to be pro-active in company education;
  • Assist in the protection of the Company’s intellectual property rights and data;
  • Work on litigation management software implementation; utilize this software in litigation management activities; and work to keep the litigation calendar up to date;
  • Work on special projects to support the work of the Legal Department and the needs of the Company.


Minimum Requirements:

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and member in good standing of State Bar (Illinois preferred)
  • Flexible team player who is professional and service-oriented at all times.
  • Minimum three years of private practice litigation experience, including drafting pleadings, going to court, arguing motions, etc.
  • Employment law experience (in-house or in a law firm)
  • Working knowledge of employment, wage and hour, employee leave, EEO and NLRB laws and regulations
  • Ability to collaborate well with attorneys and colleagues
  • Be fully accountable and able to exercise sound judgment
  • Ability to proactively identify and analyze potential legal issues, and to develop creative and business focused legal advice and solutions
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to manage multiple projects at once, follow through and meet deadlines
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to travel within the U.S., as needed (occasional to moderate travel)


Desirable Qualification(s): Prior in-house legal experience; healthcare experience; experience handling intellectual property issues, including trademark issues
